In practice, for a standard Kenya or Tanzania safari, the list of genuinely necessary vaccines is shorter and more manageable [1]. Here is an honest breakdown.

Vaccinations Required by Law

Yellow Fever: This is the only vaccination that Kenya or Tanzania may require by law — and only if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission [2] (most of sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South America). If you are flying directly from Europe, North America or East Asia, you will not be required to show proof of vaccination. However, if your itinerary includes Uganda, Rwanda or parts of Tanzania near the DRC border, vaccination is strongly recommended regardless of legal requirement [3].

Strongly Recommended for East Africa

Hepatitis A: Transmitted through contaminated food and water. Recommended for all travellers regardless of destination [1]. Two doses provide lifelong protection.

Typhoid: Risk is low in well-run safari camps where food handling is controlled, but vaccination is standard practice for East Africa travel [4]. Oral or injectable options are available.

Tetanus, diphtheria and polio: Ensure your routine vaccination boosters are current. Most adults need a tetanus booster every ten years [5].

Hepatitis B: Recommended if you might have any medical procedures performed locally, have contact with blood, or plan extended travel [1].

Optional or Situational

Rabies: Recommended for travellers who will be in remote areas far from rapid medical access, or who plan walking safaris [6]. Pre-exposure vaccination does not eliminate the need for post-exposure treatment but buys critical time.

Cholera: Risk for safari travellers staying in established camps is very low. Oral vaccine available if your itinerary includes areas with active outbreaks [1].

Meningococcal meningitis: Recommended for travel to the “meningitis belt” — primarily the Sahel region, not typically East African safari destinations [7].

Timing

Start the vaccination process at least six weeks before departure [1]. Some vaccines require multiple doses spaced weeks apart. Your travel medicine clinic or GP can review your complete vaccination history and advise on gaps.

Africa Calling provides all guests with a destination health briefing at the time of booking. Contact us to start the planning process.

About the Authors

Prof. Giorgi Pkhakadze, MD MPH PhD

Medical Reviewer & Co-Author

Professor of Public Health at David Tvildiani Medical University, Tbilisi.
