Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda: Kibale Forest and Our Closest Relatives
Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda’s Kibale Forest is one of East Africa’s most powerful wildlife experiences — and one of the most distinct from the savannah safari. Tracking our closest living relatives through dense tropical forest on foot creates a different kind of encounter than any vehicle-based game drive.
Kibale Forest and the Ngogo Community
Kibale National Park in southwestern Uganda hosts the highest density of chimpanzees in East Africa — approximately 1,500 individuals in 13 habituated communities. The Ngogo community, with over 200 members, is the world’s largest known chimpanzee social group. Kibale also holds red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive colobus, black-and-white colobus, and forest elephants, making it one of the most primate-diverse forests in Africa.
The Trekking Experience
Treks are led by trackers who locate chimps by sound — their calls carry up to 2 km through forest. Groups are limited to eight visitors per habituation. Once found, you spend up to one hour with the community: observing grooming, infant play, feeding behaviour, and the dominance interactions between males. Chimps move through multiple forest levels, and encounters range from ground-level feeding to high canopy travel.

Combining with a Kenya Safari
Uganda is a short flight from Nairobi. A 3–4 night Uganda extension combining Kibale with Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (gorilla trekking) makes one of East Africa’s most complete wildlife itineraries when combined with a Kenya savannah safari.
How far in advance should I book chimp trekking permits?
6–12 months for peak season (June–August, December–January). Shoulder season permits may be available 4–6 weeks ahead. The Uganda Wildlife Authority manages permit allocation.
What is the physical difficulty level of chimp trekking?
Moderate. Trails can be steep and slippery in wet conditions. Good fitness and waterproof footwear are recommended. Most participants of average fitness complete treks without difficulty.
Is there a health risk from close proximity to chimpanzees?
Chimpanzees can contract human respiratory diseases. Visitors with colds, flu, or respiratory infections are asked not to trek. A minimum 7-metre distance is maintained. Masks are sometimes required.
Are permits expensive?
USD 200–250 per person for standard chimp trekking in Kibale (2024 rates). Gorilla trekking permits in Bwindi are USD 700 per person. Both are considered excellent value for the quality and exclusivity of the encounter.
