Kenya’s Coral Coast: Mombasa, Watamu and the Marine Parks

Key Message: Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast combines white-sand beaches, coral reef snorkelling and Swahili culture — an ideal post-safari extension with no additional vaccinations beyond standard safari requirements.

The Coastal Ecosystem

Kenya’s 536-kilometre coastline is fronted by a near-continuous fringing reef supporting over 3,000 marine species. Malindi and Watamu Marine Parks — established in 1968 — are among Africa’s oldest marine protected areas.

Water temperatures range from 24°C in July to 29°C in February. Visibility is best April–September during the dry southeast monsoon. November’s northwest monsoon brings calm seas ideal for dhow trips.

Watamu Marine National Park

Kenya’s premier snorkelling and diving destination. Three coral gardens — Blue Lagoon, Whale Island and Turtle Bay — lie within swimming distance. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the beach August–November, and the park runs a tagging and release programme guests may observe.

Marine biodiversity: Watamu records over 600 fish species and 150 coral species — comparable in density to sections of the Great Barrier Reef within its protected zones.

Mombasa Old Town

A UNESCO World Heritage site candidate preserving 14th-century Swahili architecture, Portuguese Fort Jesus (1593) and a living culture of Arabic, Indian and African heritage. The narrow lanes, carved wooden doors and spice markets reward a half-day walking tour. Fort Jesus museum holds one of East Africa’s finest collections of Portuguese and Swahili artefacts.

“When guests ask me what to do after the Mara, I always say the coast. Three days at Watamu and you feel like you have done two completely different countries — which ecologically you have.”

Mombasa Moi International Airport connects to Nairobi with multiple daily flights (45 min). Watamu is a 2-hour drive north. Most Nairobi-based operators include a coast extension in their packages. Malaria prophylaxis applies equally on the coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is swimming safe on Kenya’s coast?
Inside the reef lagoon, yes. The reef acts as a natural barrier to strong currents. Always check with your lodge on conditions and sea urchin locations before entering the water.
What is the best time to visit Kenya’s coast?
July to October for best diving visibility and dry weather. December to February is also excellent. Avoid April–June long rains if sun is a priority.
Can I combine the coast with the Masai Mara?
Easily. Fly Mara to Nairobi (45 min), connect to Mombasa (45 min). A classic itinerary is 5–7 safari nights followed by 3–4 coast nights.
Do I need a separate visa for the coast?
No. Your Kenya eTA covers the entire country including Mombasa, Watamu and Malindi without additional paperwork.
