African Fish Eagle: The Voice of Kenya’s Lakes and Rivers
The African fish eagle is Kenya’s most iconic bird. Its distinctive two-note call — a high, yelping cry that carries across water — is the sound most closely associated with East African lakes and rivers. It is also the national bird of Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Sudan.
Fishing Technique and Success Rate
Fish eagles hunt from high, prominent perches overlooking water. They locate fish near the surface, glide down in a long arc, and snatch the prey with powerful talons at the waterline — the bird barely getting wet. The strike lasts under a second. Success rate is approximately 25% per attempt, but multiple attempts per day give the bird adequate calories from relatively brief effort. Fish eagles are opportunistic: they also steal prey from other birds (kleptoparasitism) and occasionally take waterbirds, small mammals, and carrion.
Pair Bonding and Nesting
Fish eagles are monogamous and typically mate for life. Pairs maintain and add to the same nest structure over many years — nests can reach 1.5 m in diameter and nearly as much in depth after decades of accumulation. Both birds participate in nest maintenance and chick-rearing. The distinctive duet call, with both birds throwing their heads back simultaneously, is a territorial and pair-bonding display performed daily.

Best Places to See Fish Eagles in Kenya
Lake Naivasha, Lake Baringo, Lake Victoria’s Kenyan shoreline, and the Tana River delta are the best locations. The Mara and Musiara rivers within the Masai Mara ecosystem also have resident pairs visible on most game drives.
Is the fish eagle call the sound used in jungle movies?
Yes. The African fish eagle call has been used in countless Hollywood films as generic “Africa” or even “jungle” sound, including scenes set in places where the species does not occur.
What fish do African fish eagles prey on?
Tilapia and lungfish are the most common prey in Kenya. Fish up to 1 kg can be carried; larger fish may be dragged to shore. Catfish and other surface-feeding species are also taken.
Are fish eagle populations stable?
Generally yes, though water quality decline and introduced species (water hyacinth, Nile perch in Lake Victoria) reduce prey availability in some areas.
How do I photograph a fish eagle strike?
Continuous burst mode with a minimum 1/2000s shutter speed. Position the vehicle between the perch and open water, and wait. Guides familiar with individual birds can predict hunting patterns.
