Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park: Gorillas, Golden Monkeys, and Misty Peaks
Volcanoes National Park is Africa's most celebrated gorilla sanctuary. Here is everything you need to plan the visit.
In the Virunga Mountains on Rwanda’s northern border, eight habituated gorilla families welcome a limited number of visitors each day. Permits cost USD 1,500 per person and sell out months in advance for peak season — book through the Rwanda Development Board website as early as possible.
Treks last between thirty minutes and six hours depending on where a gorilla family has moved overnight. Your guide follows fresh trail signs — bent vegetation, dung, knuckle prints in the mud — until you find them. The one-hour time limit with the gorillas feels simultaneously brief and overwhelming. Most visitors describe it as the most powerful wildlife encounter of their lives.
Golden monkey tracking is an underrated addition: smaller groups, shorter waits, and extraordinary acrobatics through the bamboo canopy at a fraction of the gorilla permit cost.
