Safari Lodges vs Tented Camps: Understanding the Difference
The choice between a fixed lodge and a classic tented camp shapes the texture of your safari more than almost any other decision. Both can deliver exceptional wildlife encounters, but the experience on the ground is genuinely different.
What Defines a Tented Camp
A genuine tented camp uses canvas walls and roof, sometimes over a wooden deck platform. At night you hear lions, hyenas, and hippos unfiltered. Temperature variations are larger. Bathrooms may be en suite or shared, often with bucket showers heated over a wood fire. This is the experience that defined East African safari from the 1920s and remains the benchmark for authenticity.
What Lodges Offer
Permanent lodges provide air conditioning or heating, consistent hot water, reliable Wi-Fi, and in some cases swimming pools. They are better suited to families with young children, travellers with specific accessibility needs, or guests visiting during the cold July–August season when canvas walls provide less warmth. Many lodges are architecturally spectacular, built into kopjes or positioned above river banks.

Making the Decision
Budget is often the deciding factor at the entry level, but at the luxury end, iconic tented camps rival any lodge for price. Consider your sensitivity to heat and cold, your tolerance for irregular water pressure, and whether hearing a lion outside your tent at 3 a.m. will thrill or terrify you.
Are tented camps safe from wildlife?
Yes. Professional camps have security protocols, including camp escorts after dark. Canvas does not stop determined large animals, but well-managed camps have strong track records of incident-free operation.
Can children stay at tented camps?
Many camps welcome children aged 8 and above. Minimum age policies vary; check with individual properties.
What is a “semi-permanent” tented camp?
A semi-permanent camp uses canvas tents on raised platforms with en suite bathrooms, hot water, and electricity — closer to a lodge experience inside a tent aesthetic.
Do lodges typically have better food?
Not necessarily. Camp kitchen quality varies widely in both categories. Top tented camps serve food that rivals any lodge restaurant.
